Position Sensors

Contactless measurement solution for position measurement

JAQUET position sensors provide cost effective solutions for contactless swashplate position measurement using Eddy current technology. The sensor is easy to install and adjust compared to LVDT sensors (Linear variable differential transformer).

A swashplate is a type of mechanism which allows a rotating motion to be transferred into a reciprocating motion or a reciprocating movement into a rotating one, which can replace the crankshaft in engine designs.

The swashplate mechanism is used in axial-piston, hydraulic pumps and motors to convert translational motion of a piston into rotational motion of a drive shaft. It is important to have control over this mechanism, preferably contactless, in order to avoid service issues.

JAQUET’s Eddy current based position sensor measures the change in airgap over an application specific designed target (that can be fitted to the piston, for example) with either an analogue or digital output. With the touch of one button, setup is easily handled by our programming device with teach-in function. The system can be tailored exactly to the customer’s application.

Choosing the best technology for your product

JAQUET TECHNOLOGY GROUP is in a position to offer a variety of different sensing technologies for heavy-duty environments and package them according to the needs of our customers. 

Not every sensing technology is suitable for use in demanding applications, and selecting the best technology is often a challenge. Over the years, we have focused on three core technologies, each of them having its specific advantages. 

Variable reluctance (VR) sensors detect a change in the magnetic flux passing through the sensing element, which is composed of a copper coil, a metal pole piece and a permanent magnet. Used in combination with a cogwheel or cograil, the sensor generates an analog electrical signal with a frequency and amplitude that are both proportional to rotational or linear speed. VR sensors are particularly suitable for use in high temperature applications where other sensor technologies cannot be used. Their main disadvantage is that the signal amplitude at low speeds can be very low.

Hall effect sensors are able to sense the amplitude of a magnetic field. They are usually combined with an electronic circuit that switches the output signal from low to high or vice-versa when certain levels of the magnetic field reached. Hall effect speed sensors typically generate a digital output signal with a frequency proportional to rotational or linear speed. Their main advantage is that they can operate down to very low speeds or even standstill. In most cases, their application is limited to ambient temperatures of 125°C or 150°C.

Eddy current sensors combine the advantages of VR and Hall effect sensors. As they typically do not need any electronics at the sensing point, they can be used in higher temperature environments. On the other hand, they generally present a good low speed response and their signal amplitude does not vary over the speed range.

Thanks to decades of experience in sensing rotational speed, JAQUET can provide the perfect speed sensor solution for every application.

Over the years, we have specialized in combining different sensing technologies with customized sensor housing designs. Most sensor models we create today are customer specific – designed to perfectly fit the application.

While steel housings have been and still are used in many cases, higher volume applications can benefit from the use of plastic sensor housings. These generally enable lower cost designs and shorter manufacturing processes. Modern materials allow us to use plastic housings up to ambient temperatures of 250°C. Our manufacturing facilities are equipped with state of the art injection molding technology.  

If more than one speed signal is required, e.g. for separate monitoring and control systems, various multi-channel sensor variants are available, either with a common supply voltage circuit or with compley separate power supplies for each channel. This approach helps reduce assembly time and increases redundancy in the overall installation.
